Beyond What is Seen

I see the limitless sky.
The bold, protruding rocks piercing an endless blue.
Brush struggling to survive against all odds
in a place inhospitable to their needs.
I see clouds, rain is coming.
I see slopes, varied in their sharpness
from a gentle curve to a whip-lash inducing arch.
I imagine an oasis beyond the horizon.
I envision the stars made invisible by daylight
yet ever present in the sky.
Brush surviving despite struggling against all odds.
I imagine the weary traveller who came upon this place,
his camera.
I imagine the heat of summer
bearing down on his shoulders.
I imagine the dusty road he stands on,
and the worn-down sneakers that support his feet.

Desert beauty is not appreciated as it should be. There are so many layers to its magnificence that one picture and one caption can’t describe the life that thrives in the desert despite all that stands in its way. I wrote this piece to highlight that. Being from Arizona, I have learned to love the harsh landscape, and I hope this piece can help others feel the same way.
